Legal Framework

The complete terms governing your use of Nova and our community-supported development model

1. Agreement to Terms

By using Nova ("the Software"), you agree to be bound by these Terms of Service ("Terms"). If you disagree with any part of these terms, you may not use Nova.

These Terms apply to Nova, the Obsidian plugin created and maintained by Shawn Duggan ("we," "us," or "our").

2. Software License

Open Source License: Nova is released under the AGPL-3.0 license. You may use, modify, and distribute the software according to the terms of this license.

Core Features: All selection-based editing, chat commands, and document integration features are free to use with your own API keys.

No Restrictions: There are no artificial limitations on the free version of Nova. All features become free over time.

3. Supernova Subscription

Early Access: Supernova supporters receive early access to new features (typically 3-6 months before general release).

Billing: Supernova Annual subscriptions ($29/year) auto-renew unless cancelled. Founding Supernova ($79) is a one-time payment for lifetime access.

Cancellation: You may cancel your Supernova subscription at any time through the customer portal. No refunds are provided for partial subscription periods.

Feature Access: If you cancel, you retain access to current Supernova features until they become free in the general release.

4. Acceptable Use

You agree not to use Nova for:

  • Any illegal activities or content that violates applicable laws
  • Generating spam, harmful content, or content that violates others' rights
  • Attempting to reverse engineer, hack, or compromise the software
  • Commercial redistribution without complying with the AGPL-3.0 license
  • Any activity that could harm our infrastructure or other users

5. Privacy and Data

No Data Collection: We do not collect, store, or transmit your documents or writing content.

API Keys: You provide your own API keys for AI services. These are stored locally in your Obsidian vault.

Local Storage: All conversations and settings are stored locally on your device.

6. Disclaimers and Limitations

No Warranties: Nova is provided "as is" without any warranties, express or implied.

AI Content: Content generated by AI providers through Nova is not guaranteed to be accurate, appropriate, or suitable for any particular purpose.

Third-Party Services: Nova integrates with third-party AI services. We are not responsible for their availability, terms, or content.

Limitation of Liability: Our liability is limited to the amount you paid for Supernova in the twelve months prior to any claim.

7. Support

Community Support: All users have access to community support through GitHub issues and discussions.

Priority Support: Supernova supporters receive priority response times and direct creator access.

No Guarantees: While we strive to provide helpful support, we cannot guarantee resolution of all issues or feature requests.

8. Intellectual Property

Nova Brand: The Nova name, logo, and branding are our property and may not be used without permission.

Your Content: You retain full ownership of all content you create using Nova.

AGPL Compliance: Any modifications or derivatives of Nova must comply with AGPL-3.0 license terms.

9. Changes to Terms

We may update these Terms periodically. Significant changes will be announced through our newsletter and posted on this page.

Your continued use of Nova after changes constitutes acceptance of the new Terms.

10. Governing Law

These Terms are governed by the laws of Nova Scotia, Canada. Any disputes will be resolved in the courts of Nova Scotia.
